ED-5 keys are crystallized strains of ED-5 viruses. The key partly de-crytallizes upon contact with a substrate-layer, releasing the specific ED-5 strain required to cause a reversible clasp-formation mutation in the cells of the bio-lock. The clasp formation is entirely different each time and is practically unbreakable. ED-5 lock formations were invented by Eduardo Cinquanto: an eccentric biotechnician obsessed with the effects of engineered viruses on his own brand of lab-grown, self-sustaining 'bio-putty' ('nutty about the putty' is how he often describes himself, which is indeed quite true).
